About This Service

What Is Buffing?

Buffing is a machine process that uses a buffing pad and compound to smooth the surface of your paint, removing light scratches, scuffs, and dull spots to restore shine. It works by gently cutting down the area around a defect until it blends with the surrounding paint, so the mark disappears or fades significantly. Unlike a full paint correction, buffing is typically used to target a specific spot rather than the entire vehicle.

Why Buffing Matters

Scratches, scuffs, and dull spots happen to every vehicle, whether from a shopping cart, a tight parking space, or years of everyday use. Left alone, these marks stand out more over time as dirt and oxidation settle into them. Buffing gives you a targeted fix for exactly the problem area bothering you, without paying for a correction across panels that do not need it.

What We Do

Every buffing job starts with an honest look at the damage, since not every mark can be fully removed. Here is how we approach it:

Spot assessment

We check the scratch or scuff in person and tell you honestly whether buffing will fix it before we start

Compound and pad selection

We match the compound and pad to your paint type and how deep the defect is

Machine buffing

We work the area with a machine buffer to smooth the surface and blend the repair into the surrounding paint

Finish and protect

We polish the area to match the surrounding gloss, and can add wax or sealant to protect the fresh finish

Because we come to you, this whole process happens right in your driveway, with no need to book a shop appointment for a single spot.

Comparison

Buffing vs Polishing: What Is the Difference?

Buffing and polishing are related but different processes, and the confusion between them is common. Buffing typically targets a specific scratch, scuff, or scrape using a coarser compound to cut down the surrounding area and blend the defect away. Polishing is a broader process applied across an entire panel or vehicle, using finer compounds to remove light imperfections and bring out overall clarity and gloss, and it is usually one stage within a full paint correction.

Car Buffing Cost

Car buffing cost depends on how many spots need attention and how deep the scratches or scuffs are, since a single scuff costs far less than buffing out several scratches across the vehicle. We confirm exactly how much your buffing will cost after we assess the damage in person, so how much you pay is never a surprise.

What's Included

What Is Included in Our Buffing Services

Every service below can be booked on its own or added to a full detail.

Spot Scratch Buffing

We target a single scratch and buff it out or blend it down until it is far less noticeable against the surrounding paint. This is the most affordable option when only one mark is bothering you.

Scuff and Scrape Removal

Parking lot scuffs and curb scrapes often transfer paint or rubber onto your bumper or panel, and we buff the area to lift the transfer and smooth the surface. Most scuffs come out completely, since they usually sit on top of the clear coat rather than cutting into it.

Full Panel Buffing

When a panel has several scratches or scuffs spread across it, we buff the entire panel for a more even, consistent finish rather than treating each mark separately. This gives a cleaner result than spot-by-spot repairs when the damage is spread out.

Buff and Wax Combo

We pair your buffing service with a coat of wax to protect the freshly buffed area and blend its shine with the rest of the vehicle. This is a smart add-on any time buffing leaves a section looking noticeably glossier than the paint around it.

Common Issues

Scratches and Scuffs Buffing Fixes

The same scratches and scuffs show up on almost every vehicle, usually from parking lots, tight garages, or everyday driving. Here is what we see most and how buffing handles each one.

Scratches

Light to moderate scratches sit in the clear coat and catch the light, making an otherwise clean panel look marked. We buff them out by smoothing the surrounding clear coat down to the depth of the scratch, so it blends away or disappears. Deeper scratches that reach the base color cannot be fully buffed out, and we tell you honestly which category yours falls into.

Scuffs

Scuffs usually come from a shopping cart, a curb, or brushing against another surface, often leaving a mark without breaking the clear coat. Because scuffs are typically surface-level, they respond very well to buffing and often come out completely. This is one of the most common and most satisfying fixes we do.

Scrapes

Scrapes go deeper than a scuff and can leave visible lines or transferred material from whatever caused them. We buff the area to smooth the surface and blend the scrape into the surrounding paint as much as the depth allows. Some scrapes improve dramatically, while the deepest ones may need paint correction or touch-up paint instead.

Can Scratches Be Buffed Out?

Most light scratches that sit only in the clear coat can be buffed out or significantly reduced. Scratches that have gone through the clear coat into the base color cannot be fully removed by buffing, since polishing only affects the clear coat layer. We always assess your specific scratch in person and give you an honest answer before we start any work.

Every Vehicle

Buffing for Every Vehicle

Buffing works on any painted or gel coat surface, and we buff every type of vehicle. Here is what our service covers for each.

Dark red sports car with scratch-free gloss after mobile buffing

Car Buffing

Cars and SUVs pick up scratches and scuffs from parking lots, tight garages, and daily driving, and car buffing is one of our most requested services. Our auto buffing targets the exact spot bothering you, matching the compound to your paint type and the depth of the mark. Most spot repairs take under an hour and blend seamlessly into the surrounding finish. See our car detailing for the complete service.

Boat gel coat restored with marine buffing compound

Boat Buffing

Gel coat scratches and scuffs more easily than automotive paint, so boats often need buffing after docking mishaps or routine handling. We use a boat buffing compound formulated specifically for gel coat, since automotive compounds are not designed for marine surfaces. Buffing fiberglass boat surfaces also helps restore the shine that saltwater and sun exposure dull over time. See our boat detailing for the full marine service.

RV exterior with restored gloss after mobile buffing

RV Buffing

RVs and motorhomes have large, flat fiberglass panels that show scratches and scuffs clearly, especially in direct sunlight. We buff out marks from branches, road debris, and tight campground spaces, working panel by panel across the large surface area. See our RV detailing for the complete service.

Motorcycle tank and fairings polished with precise hand buffing

Motorcycle Buffing

A motorcycle's tank and fairings are smaller, curved, and highly visible, so even a light scratch stands out far more than it would on a car. We buff these surfaces by hand for precise control, since a machine buffer used carelessly can do more harm than good on tight curves. See our motorcycle detailing for the full service.

My RV looked like chalk. After a full compound and polish it looks like it did when I drove it off the lot five years ago. They came to my storage facility and did it all on-site.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to what customers ask before booking. Start here.

What is buffing?

Buffing is a machine process that uses a buffing pad and compound to smooth a specific area of paint, removing light scratches and scuffs and restoring shine. It targets a spot rather than the whole vehicle, which makes it faster and more affordable than a full paint correction for isolated marks.

How much does car buffing cost?

Car buffing cost depends on how many spots need attention and how deep the marks are, since a single light scuff costs far less than buffing several deeper scratches. We assess the damage in person and confirm the exact price before we start, so you know what you are paying up front.

How much does it cost to buff out a scratch?

The cost to buff out a single scratch depends on how deep it is and how large the affected area is, with light surface scratches costing the least. Deeper scratches that need more compounding work cost more, and scratches through the clear coat may need paint correction instead of standalone buffing. We give you a clear price after inspecting the scratch, not before.

What is the difference between buffing and polishing?

Buffing targets a specific scratch or scuff using a coarser compound to blend the defect into the surrounding paint. Polishing is a broader process applied across a full panel or vehicle using finer compounds to improve overall clarity and gloss, and it is usually one stage of a complete paint correction rather than a standalone spot fix.

Can scratches be buffed out of a car?

Most light scratches that sit only in the clear coat can be buffed out or significantly reduced. Scratches that have cut through the clear coat into the base color underneath cannot be fully removed by buffing, since the process only works on the clear coat layer. We always check your scratch in person and tell you honestly what result to expect.

How long does buffing take?

A single spot buff typically takes under an hour, while full-panel buffing or multiple spots can take longer depending on how many areas need work. We give you a realistic time estimate after seeing the damage in person, since every job depends on how much correction each mark actually needs.

Do you come to my home or office?

Yes, coming to you is the core of what we do. We arrive at your home or office fully self-contained with our own water and power, so you never have to drive anywhere or leave your vehicle at a shop. Just share the location and parking details when you book. We serve customers across 80+ cities.

Do you buff boats, RVs, and motorcycles?

Yes, we buff boats, RVs, and motorcycles along with cars, SUVs, and trucks. Each surface is different, so we use the right compound for the material, including gel coat-specific products for boats. Tell us your vehicle when you book and we will confirm the right approach and price.
