ABOUT THIS SERVICE

Why Cut And Buff Is Important Before Ceramic Coating

Ceramic Coating Locks The Current Surface Condition In Place

Any swirl marks, haze, scratches, or oxidation left in the paint before coating application become permanently sealed beneath the coating layer afterward.

How Professional Cut And Buff Prepares Paint For Coating

Our mobile cut and buff service corrects visible defects before ceramic coating installation so the coating bonds to the cleanest and clearest possible paint surface.

OUR PROCESS

How We Perform Cut & Buffing

Every cut & buffing job follows this exact process — no shortcuts, no skipped steps.

  1. 01

    Inspection + Thickness Measurement

Paint-thickness gauge readings on every panel set the safe cut range. We will not cut a panel that cannot support it — we recommend a different approach instead.

  2. 02

    Decontamination Wash

Heavy foam wash, iron-fallout chemistry, and clay-bar pass. Compound on dirty paint creates more defects than it removes — full decon is non-negotiable.

  3. 03

    Test Spot

Compound and pad selection is confirmed on a hidden test panel. We adjust speed, pressure, and product before working the rest of the vehicle.

  4. 04

    Heavy-Cut Pass

Rotary or forced-rotation polisher with cutting compound and pad — removes the oxidized or damaged layer of clear coat. Worked panel-by-panel with cooling and re-evaluation.

  5. 05

    Intermediate + Finishing Polish

Two-pad refinement system — first intermediate polish to remove micro-marring from the cut, then finishing polish on a soft pad to bring out the deepest gloss.

  6. 06

    Lock-In Protection

Premium sealant or coating-ready prep. After a heavy cut, the paint is more vulnerable to re-oxidation — protection is critical and not optional.

WHY GO PROFESSIONAL

Why DIY Cut & Buff Is Risky

This is the service where bad technique permanently damages paint. We do not assume — we measure.

Burning Through Clear Coat

Compound on a rotary on thin clear coat will burn through to the base layer in seconds. We measure thickness, work cool, and pull off as soon as the panel reaches its safe cut limit.

Hologram Damage

Rotary polishers in inexperienced hands create permanent hologram patterns that show under direct sunlight. Dual-action and forced-rotation tools, plus refinement steps, eliminate that risk.

Edges and Body Lines

Edges, body lines, and panel seams have thinner clear coat — these are the spots where DIY cuts go wrong. We tape, slow down, and adjust pressure on edges.

No Refinement Step

Cutting alone leaves micro-marring even on flat panels. The intermediate and finishing polish steps are how the cut work actually looks like new — not a hazy patchy mess.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Cut & Buffing Questions — Answered

Often yes — if there is enough clear coat to safely cut, we can restore depth and gloss. We measure first. If the clear coat is too thin, we will tell you upfront and recommend a different path.

Cut & buffing is the heaviest stage of paint correction. Standard paint correction handles light-to-medium defects; cut & buffing addresses heavy oxidation and deeper damage. The technique is the same — the products and amount of material removed are different.

Yes — gelcoat is a different material than clear coat but cuts and refines on the same principles. We use marine-grade compound and the appropriate pads.

Sealant-protected: 6–12 months before maintenance polish is recommended. Ceramic-coated: years. Without protection, heavily cut paint will re-oxidize faster than original paint.

Yes — but within safe limits. Standard clear coat is 40–80 microns. Light cut removes ~5 microns. Heavy cut removes 10–20 microns. We measure before and after every panel.

Yes — in your garage or driveway. We control conditions as much as possible. A covered garage is preferred for the multi-step process.
