Leather seats are one of the most common interior upgrades — and one of the most commonly neglected. Untreated automotive leather dries out, cracks, fades, and loses softness in just a few years.

Know What You're Dealing With

Most modern "leather" is coated leather — real leather with a polyurethane finish for color, sheen, and stain resistance. You're cleaning and protecting that finish, not raw leather underneath.

What Damages Leather

UV exposure, cabin heat, dryness, friction on the driver's bolster, dye transfer from denim, and wrong cleaners (alcohol, ammonia, baby wipes) all accelerate damage.

The Care Routine

Monthly cleaning: pH-balanced leather cleaner on a microfiber cloth (never spray directly on the seat). Wipe gently; use a soft brush on stitching.

Conditioning every 3 months: Water-based conditioner in thin coats. Let absorb 10–15 minutes, buff excess. Conditioned leather feels supple, not greasy.

UV protection: Use conditioners with UV blockers; a windshield sunshade is the highest-impact step for cars parked outside.

Common Problems

• Wrinkled or loose leather — often lost moisture; repeated conditioning may help early; severe wrinkling may be permanent.
• Cracking — cannot be uncracked; prevention is the only real fix.
• Dye transfer — treat quickly; set-in dye may need a professional.

What Not to Do

No household cleaners, baby wipes, over-conditioning, conditioning without cleaning first, or silicone-heavy shine products on leather.
